Discussion Questions

1. After you have read Xenophon's Household Management, access this site on stelai (grave monuments), and discuss how the image of the relationship between husband and wife represented on the stelai compares with Xenophon's depiction and description of that same relationship. Be selective: don't attempt to discuss all of the monuments or all of the points in Xenophon's treatise. Instead, choose one of two salient points from Xenophon and a few grave monuments that illustrate your points most convincingly.
Note that I have included on the site a variety of stelai--not just those showing husband and wife. This is so that you can, if you wish, discuss whatever contrasts you may find between marital stelai and the other types.

2. Compare the role of the "foreman" (13-14) on Ischomachus' estate with his own (11-12 and elsewhere) and with that of his wife (7-10). Identify the major similarities and differences, and then select one aspect or feature from each section to compare in detail.

3. Read Xenophon's account of Socrates' visit to the hetaira Theodote. Then contrast Theodote's way of life with that of Ischomachus' wife. What are the major similarities and differences? What are the pluses and minuses of each situation?
