Sophocles, Electra
Discussion Questions

Previous Home Next

Choose a passage (10-25 lines) in either the Oresteia of Aeschylus or the Electra of Sophocles that struck you in some way. (You found it interesting, peculiar, problematic, striking, etc.)

Then:

Select at least one image (and no more than two) from among:
ancient Greek representations of Electra (either by herself or with others);
Roman representations of Electra;
the paintings of Electra by Wicar, Leighton, and Richmond;
funerary lekythoi; or
grave stelai.

Then:

Discuss the relationship between your passage and the image. The relationship can be one of contrast or complementarity; or you can argue that the image functions as a comment on the text.

Just be sure that in some way you develop an idea about Electra as expressed in both image and text.
