BRISEIS
1. Consult these additional passages of the Iliad in which Briseis appears or is mentioned:
II.688ff. (Achilles' withdrawal from battle is mentioned);
IX.307ff. , esp. 335 ff.(Achilles rejects the embassy);
XIX.54-70 (Achilles returns to battle);
XIX.282-300 (Briseis returns to Achilles' tent);
Then work out for yourself a general picture of Briseis as a character in the Iliad. How does what you learn later in the Iliad help to modify or amplify your impression of the relationship between Achilles and Briseis as you saw it in Book I? Pay attention especially to the contrast between what Achilles says in Book IX about Briseis and what he says in Book XIX. What do you think accounts for the difference?

2. Compare the representation of Briseis in the Iliad with those of her on ancient vases and in paintings in the Western tradition. How well do you think the paintings capture what we find in the Iliad? What do they add that we don't find in the epic poem? Do these additions change your picture of Briseis?

2. Read Ovid's "Epistle of Briseis to Achilles" and consider, in the light both of what is said about and by Briseis in the Iliad and of her representation in vase paintings how well Ovid has reconstructed the ancient Greek relationship between Briseis and Achilles.

HELEN
1. Read the account of Helen's response to the news of Hector's death (XXIV.609-19); then discuss how the representation of Helen in this passage accords with her portrayal in Book III of the Iliad.

2. Helen is much represented on vases and in paintings in the Western tradition. What do these representations tell you that you don't find in the Iliad? How do they affect the picture of Helen as a character in the Greek tradition?

3. Look over the range of paintings of Helen. Choose two or three of them from different schools and discuss in some detail how the conception of Helen and her myth changes in different time periods, so far as you can tell from the examples in the Image Resources.

ANDROMACHE
1. Read carefully the account of Andromache's response to the news of Hector's death (XXII.514-606); then discuss how the representation of Andromache in this passage accords with her portrayal in earlier books of the Iliad and in the pictorial representations we studied.

2. Reread Book III and reflect on the order in which Hektor meets the Trojans within the city, and on his relationship with each or each group of them. Do you think there is any significance to the order of his encounters? What do his interactions with these characters say about his relationship with Andromache.

3. Reread the meeting between Hektor and Andromache at the Skaian gates, and look over the representations of this event in Western paintings. What do you find in the paintings that isn't there in the text? What's in the text that doesn't appear in the paintings?
