3. Demosthenes in
Aetolia
- 426 summer
- The Athenians send out two fleets, one
under
Nicias
to attack
Melos,
and one under
Demosthenes
to cruise around the Peloponnese.
- Meanwhile, the
Aetolians
send an embassy to Corinth and Sparta, urging cooperation in a
joint attack upon
Naupactus
in West Locris, where an Athenian fleet has been stationed since
the winter of 430/29--serving as a lookout point and
garrison.
- At the same time, the
Messenians
in
Naupactus
urge Demosthenes to attack the
Aetolians,
arguing that, although they are numerous and warlike, their
scattered dwellings and absence of heavy armor will make them easy
to subdue.
