1. Arrival at
Rhegium
|
- The Athenian fleet arrives at
Rhegium,
but Rhegium and the other cities of Magna Gracia maintain
neutrality.
- They provide water and
anchorage, but close their gates and
markets.
- Rhegium provides a market
outside the city walls, and the Athenian forces encamp at
the shrine of
Artemis.

2. The Athenian generals
sail:

- first to
Egesta,
where the stratagem is revealed;
|
|
- then to
Naxos,
where they are received;
|
|
- then to
Catana,
where they are received after the expulsion of the
pro-Syracusan party;

Camarina,
where the Athenians are disappointed in their
expectations of being admitted;
|
- then back to
Catana,
to establish their winter quarters.
