Second
Year of the Sicilian Expedition

At the beginning of the summer,
cavalry reinforcements arrive from Athens and are joined by
levies from the allies:
- 100 from
Sicels,
Naxians,
and others.
The Athenians at Catana board their
army, sail to
Leon,
just north of Syracuse, and disembark.
Their aim is to begin the siege of
Syracuse.
They advance on the run to
Epipolae,
the large plateau above the town of
Syracuse.
The fleet sails to the peninsula of
Thapsos
and anchors there.
A stockade across the isthmus of
the peninsula is constructed to protect the
ships.
The Syracusans, meanwhile, decide
to guard the approaches to Epipolae.
They march out to the western
approach, but are met by the Athenians and defeated in
battle.
