4. Demosthenes in Amphilochia - 426/5 bce

  • Eurylochus and his forces advance upon Demosthenes' right wing and threaten to overwhelm it.
  • The Messenians in ambush spring up and attack Eurylochus' left wing from behind.
  • The Peloponnesian line breaks; they panic and flee, "terrified beyond measure at seeing the division of Eurylochus and their best troops cut to pieces."
  • "Most of the work was done by Demosthenes and his Messenians."
  • The Ambracians on the Spartan right wing defeat the opposing Athenian forces and pursue them to Argos.
  • Returning, they find that the Acarnanians have defeated their main forces in the center.
  • The battle ends at evening, with the Spartans capitulating and requesting a truce.
