4. Demosthenes in Amphilochia - 426 bce

  • On the sixthday both sides form battle lines.
  • The Peloponnesian forces are larger and outflank their opponents.
  • Eurylochus and his men are on the left; the rest of the line is Ambracians and Peloponnesian allies.
  • Demosthenes draws up his forces so that he is on the right, facing Eurylochus, with the 200 Messenian hoplites and a few Athenians; the rest of his line is Acarnanians and Amphilochian dart-throwers.
  • Demosthenes positions 400 hoplites and light-armed troops in ambush on his right, in a sunken road hidden by bushes.
