4. Demosthenes in Amphilochia -
426 bce
- In the winter of 426/5 the
Ambracians
march out against Amphilochian Argos with 3000 hoplites,
and occupy
Olpae.
- The
Acarnanians
march out in support of Argos, and position their forces
at
Argos
and
Crenae.
- The Ambracians send for their
Spartan allies, and the Acarnanians send for Demosthenes
and the Athenians.
- The
Spartans
under
Eurylochus
march up from Aetolia
through Acarnania and into Amphilochia, crossing
Mt
Thyamus to join up with the
Ambracians at Olpae.
- The
Athenians
in 20 ships, with 200 Messenian hoplites and 60 Athenian
archers, sail up through the
Ambracian
Gulf and anchor off
Olpae.
- Demosthenes
and his forces join up with the
Acarnanians
at Crenae and encamp near
Olpae.
- Five days pass during which both
sides remain inactive.
