5. Detour on the way to
Sicily
(Thucydides 4.2-5,
4.8-23)
- 60 Peloponnesian ships are sent to Corcyra
to support the exiles.
- Demosthenes persuades the commanders to put
in at Pylos on the way to Corcyra.
- The fleet is trapped there by a squall; the
Athenians are bored and built a fort on the land
side.
- Demosthenes and 5 ships remain at Pylos;
the rest sail on to Corcyra and Sicily, and get as far as
Zacynthus.
- Meanwhile, the Spartans prepare to assault
the Athenian encampment.
- The 60 Spartan ships are recalled from
Corcyra; they are dragged across Isthmus of Leucas and return
unseen by the Athenians at Zacynthus.
