Allies of Sparta and Athens at the beginning of the Peloponnesian War (431 bce)

"These were the allies of Sparta: all the Peloponnesians within the Isthmus except the Argives and Achaeans, who were neutral....Outside the Peloponnesusthe Megarians, [East] Locrians, Boeotians, Phocians, Ambraciots, Leucadians, and Anactorians....This was the Spartan confederacy.

That of Athens comprised the Chians,
Lesbians,
Plataeans,
the
Messenians in Naupactus,
most of the
Acarnanians,
the
Corcyraeans,
Zacynthians,
and some tributary cities in the following countries,namely,
the seaboard part of
Caria with its Dorian neighbors,
Ionia,
the
Hellespont,
the
Thracian cities,
the
islands lying between the Peloponnnesus and Crete toward the east, and all the Cyclades except Melos and Thera."
