- born in Sicily (hence his name);
visited Egypt; settled in Rome around 56

- Books 1-6 cover the geography,
ethnography, mythology and marvels of the world prior to
the Trojan War
- Books 1-3 treat the
East
- Books 5-6 treat the
West
- quote from Book IV.56.1-2:

"Speaking generally,
it is because of the desire of the tragic poets
for the marvelous that so varied and
inconsistent an account of Medea has been given
out....In our judgement it is unnecessary and
would be tedious to record all the assertions
which the writers of myths have made about
Medea, and so we shall add only those items
which have been passed over concerning the
history of the Argonauts."
