Spring 2002 Aristophanes, The Frogs
The last three classes of the semester will be devoted to enactments of short scenes from the play (around 20 lines each) in the original language and meter. We'll select the scenes together in the course of the semester, making sure that we include one group of iambic trimeter dialogue, one of a choral passage, and one of anapests. This will ensure that you leave the course with some knowledge of comic meter and also with some sense of the pleasures and problems of trying to translate textual words into dramatic action. You will work together to prepare these scenes, and you can use your own sense of drama to stage them. (Costumes and props are optional but encouraged!) For each scene, you'll need to prepare a "script" which you can use both to rehearse and also for class presentation.
Each of you will be submitting a ten-page final paper for the course (see Quizzes and Final Paper). On the Monday following the Thanksgiving break, when the third quiz is due in, each of you will give a short report (no more than ten minutes) on your progress to date. On that occasion, other students will comment on the ideas, organization, and overall conception of your paper, and may offer you some suggestions based on their own reading.
