The world according to the ancient Greek view: Oceanus flowed around what was conceived as a flat dish. Colchis was at its outer edges, and the Argonauts are supposed to have returned, not by sailing back the way they came, but by going around the bottom of the dish and dragging the Argo across Africa. This leaves unexplained how they managed to stop off in Lemnos: in most accounts of the Voyage of the Argo, it is the first stop on the voyage. But Pindar seems to place it pretty clearly on the way home. |
